Orchards in Arabia Again

The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “The Hour will not come until the lands of Arabia return thick orchards and rivers.” [Muslim]

The use of the word “return” in this Hadith tells us that the deserts of Arabia used to be green lands. Satellite radar images showing dry river-beds, currently covered by sand dunes, have revealed that rivers used to flow through Arabia.

In Surah al-Shu’ara of the Quran, Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) tells us that the land of the people of Aad in Arabia used to be like Paradise before Allah destroyed them. Where they used to live is now a part of the dry Arabian desert.

This Hadith informs us of the past as well as the future. It tells us that the land of Arabia will become green again before the Day of Judgement. Some people explain this with the coming of the next Ice Age and the North Polar icebergs slowly moving southwards. It is said that when these polar icebergs come relatively close to the Arabian Peninsula, the weather will change and Arabia will become one of the greenest and wettest parts of the world again, fertile, and with rivers. However, a Muslim’s belief is not dependent on remote sensing images or the explanations of geologists.

The prediction and knowledge of the Unseen imparted to us in this Hadith, is one of the miracles by which a person may come closer to accepting the divine commission of Muhammad (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam). Such miracles of the Quran and Hadith strengthen our faith in them as direct revelation from Allah (subhana wa ta’ala)
